Dear Prospective Volunteer: Chile, which has been referred to as the "Jaguar of Latin America" by local economists, is the first country in Latin America to have a free economy. However, despite this relative prosperity within Latin America, there continues to be great disparity between social classes in Chile. We are still an undeveloped country and need much assistance from others to build houses, improve education, develop business relations, and decrease illiteracy. Many volunteer opportunities are available with school children, youth with drug problems, the elderly and with teaching second languages (French, German, and English) to Chilenos. Your help is needed! Contact us and tell us where and how you would like to help. This photo, taken from a cable car in San Cristobal Hill, depicts the underdevelopment between North Santiago (on the left) which is "flat" and has less commerce in comparison with the wealthier and more developed areas with skyscrapers of North Santiago (on the right).
